New Adult Contemporary
When a TV production company decides Dogwood, Virginia is the perfect location to shoot their new teen series Bittersweet, the town is abuzz with excitement. But twenty-one-year-old local girl Cathy Johnson has too much going on in her life to waste time being star-struck. Her mother walked out on the family when Cathy was a young girl and her brother Carl was barely out of diapers. She’s always felt a sense of responsibility to help raise him, and skipped college after graduation following her father Joe’s life-threatening heart attack. Now three years later, she works full-time in the family restaurant to help make ends meet. Life hasn’t exactly been peachy, but Cathy is OK with it. She loves her hometown, and doesn’t want some fancy TV show coming in and changing everything. To her, ‘bittersweet’ is just the word that sums up her love life after her relationship with her high school sweetheart ended in disaster. But since then she’s hardly had time to brush her hair, let alone think about romance – even the kind being played out in front of the cameras by twenty-something actors posing as teenagers.
But all that changes for Cathy when charming, intense, impossibly sexy outsider Greg Moran arrives in Dogwood along with the Bittersweet cast and crew. She and the mysterious New Yorker have undeniable chemistry, but if Cathy thought she was guarded…? Greg blows hot (very, very hot) and cold with her romantically, leaving Cathy’s head in a spin. If she’s willing to drop her emotional walls, why can’t he? What is it in Greg’s past – or present – that means he’s keeping her at arm’s length?
One thing’s for certain: Cathy and Greg are magnetically drawn to one another, but they’ll have to fight to keep their relationship from turning sour.
If it’s hard to let go of the past, falling in love can be BITTERSWEET…
Bittersweet was one of the many holiday reads I devoured while I was away last month with my sister and it's a great holiday read. Cathy lives and works in the small town she grew up in. Nothing exciting happens but that all changes when the town is used as a filming location for the next big TV show, Bittersweet. The town is descended on by actors and crew but before most of them arrive Cathy runs into Greg, who she thinks is one of the crew but is really an actor in the show, and is instantly attracted to him and he to her.
The book follows the town being overtaken by the actors and through it you see Cathy and drew get together and fall for each other but it's far from plain sailing and I loved all the twists and turns for these two. Nothing was easy for them and being in a relationship with an actor is difficult for Cathy especially since his costar Bethany is hell bent on having him for herself.
Cathy and Greg together was beautiful to read. They were just perfect for each other and really needed to find one another. There were numerous times where I want to whack them both over the head. Greg was soso hell bent on fitting in with his costars that he neglected to see the affect he was having on Cathy and there is one scene at the restaurant that Cathy works where I really wanted to hit him. And then there's Cathy, who constantly jumps to conclusions the moment something goes wrong and almost ruins everything.
I really enjoyed reading this book and as the resident of a small town I started daydreaming about a TV show being made there and how cool it would be to fall in love with one of the stars. This book is every TV fangirl's dream come true.
During the book, you get the sense that there is something that Greg is hiding and it really was not what I expected it to be and I really love that. Sunday went with something you wouldn't guess.
I didn't realise when I signed up for the tour that this will be a trilogy and seeing how the book ends that makes sense. I can't wait to see what happens next.
