New Adult Contemporary/Sports Romance
Release Date: 21st October 2014
College freshman Lucia Ramirez has a secret crush on Dane Monroe. He's a tall drink of water - blond, brash, and one hell of a volleyball player. Hijole. Lucia hopes her volleyball scholarship to his school will make him notice her.
Too bad what's noticeable is Dane's obvious hatred for Lucia. Her family's politics contradict everything he stands for. And politics are front and center in both their families. Dane's mother is about to face Lucia's father in the race for US President.
When Secret Service throws them together, Dane can't deny his frustrating attraction to Lucia's athletic curves and sweet faith in the world. Amid the intense pressure of college athletics and presidential politics, can opposites not just attract, but overcome overwhelming odds to be together? Or do their differences block their match from the start?
I was kindly gifted an arc of Blocked by Jennifer Lane to review. Blocked tells the story of two college volleyball players, Lucia and Dane who are immensely attracted to each other but are fighting the attraction because both their parents are running to become the President of the United States and their political beliefs are at complete polar opposites. When Lucia's Secret Service detail can't find somewhere adequately secure for her to stay she lands up living with Dane.
I loved reading this book and it was great to see Lucia and Dane's relationship develop from one of hatred covering attraction to full out love. The dynamic between the two is amazing and so well written they both know how to help the other and calm them down and I think that's what makes it inevitable that they will be together.
I loved reading the alternate POV's a well. Lucia narrates a chapter and then it switches to Dane and visa versa because then you really get to see what each of them is going through not just with their feelings but how the presidential race is affecting them and the influence their families have over them. Although, I think Lucia's family has a much larger influence over her than Dane's does over his.
The sporting element was, of course, there and, as someone who has no clue about anything themed volleyball I was worried that the sporting scenes would be boring but they weren't. Lucia and Dane's narration made sure of that! Especially Dane's narration when he went along to support Lucia.
Of course, their relationship doesn't stay secret for long and eventually their families find out and then you get to see how much Lucia had grown as a person. She stands up to her father and for the man she loves to say no, I want to be with him. So, you see this book wasn't just about college kids falling in love it was about them developing and seeing that only they can control their own destiny and can be together despite their differing political beliefs.
